I hear you. Actually that's what the manzanita was meant for, to replace the maple branches. But I had been studying some of the scapes by the aquarium design group and some others and figured the wood would work well to try some of the scaping ideas out. I also wanted to change out the flourite substrate in favour of sand, again the white silica sand seemed good for a different approach.
My main tank is a malawi biotope style tank, and I am very happy with it. It gets better with age and I don't touch it. This was a spare tank I had laying around, and I wanted to use it to experiment with different things. Different scapes, but also to see how it would affect the fish and their behaviour. While I noticed the cardinals seemed to be more comfortable in the previous setup. I think due to the subdued lighting mostly. However, after only 4 days after converting to the current scape/setup, my angel pair has spawned for the first time. They never did in the black water setup. Probably just a coincidence, but interesting learning anyways. Now lets see if anything happens with the apisto pair. Thanks.
