i'm getting a new (to me) tank tomorrow and the guy said it holds water fine with no leaks, but there are a couple knicks in the silicone from tank cleaning, and is going to throw in the silicone with it just to be safe. my question is, can i just goop this crap on over the existing seal or what? i've never done this, nor want to make a project as of it, so don't want to strip down and redo. and how long does it usually take to dry. i have my current tank sold but can't get rid of it till everythings transferred to the new one.. i'm that '1 tank' person

new silicone doesnt bond well with old silicone, it may seal a small leak if there is one, but wont do much for keeping the tank from falling apart if the old silicone is failing. If you feel there is a need, then strip out the old silicone and apply a new seal.

as far as drying time, it depends on the humidity and temp. I usually go with whats on the tube, plus a halfday or more to be sure.

No spreading silicone over the existing silicone will just postpone any leaks for a few months.best to test it outside. If it leaks you have to strip it down to clean glass to get a good seal.
