My Rays have been fine in this gravel substrate for the last 7 months with no signs of any irritation on the underside. They can even bury themselves in it. My question is I am going to move them to my 450 gallon and now is my chance to change the substrate. I like the looks of the gravel and it's easy to clean but would the Rays benefit more from the sand and would pups do better in sand or gravel? On a side note there is going to be tankmates in the tank with the Rays so how hard is it to keep the sand looking clean. Gravel on the other hand never looks dirty! Any suggestions!

The tank is run on a sump with the over flows on the outside on the sides. The powerheads running are ecotech vortec about 18 inches centered from the bottom of the tank. If any one has this kind of setup is the sand hard on the magnets and impellers? Here are the pics of the substrate they are in and the substrate in the 450 gallon. The only noticeable difference is the gravel is a little bigger in the 450.

BARE BOTTOM is the best IMO, makes your fish active too cus no hiding spots
That's why I like the gravel because they stay on top and only bury down when they are spooked! Also the tank looks more natural when you put some ornaments in it! Decisions, Decisions. Thats why I like instruction books, just follow what the book says!!

burying is a natural instinct, I would use sand, to let them do whatever they feel comfortable with.

sure they will hide for the first few weeks, but they hardly do after that. and if they get spooked for whatever reason, at least they can do what they do in the wild and hide.

its prity cute too, seeing two little eyes poking out of the sand. .

+1 for sand from me..
