I've just bought a used 90 gallon tank. How do you know if it needs to be re-siliconed or not? He said he did it three years ago when he bought it, but my sister suggested I do it anyway as there is algae behind the silicone.
Is it hard to do? It doesn't leak as he had water in it.

i would re seal it only if it looks bad. since it holds water its fine

personally if there is algae behind i would resilicone as its compromised

trim out the old silicone with a razor then make sure the glass is scraped clean and bead in the new silicone making sure you get good coverage an overlap in the corners

you can use painters tape to make it so you get a nice straight seal line as well

Thank you. I think we will give it a try. Is there a site that walks you through it step by step by chance?

do it, i just did it to my 180 its drying right now, just google how to reseal a fish tank i used ge slicone 1 windows & doors, its easy its worth it. and you dont need to use a lot i didnt know that a put way to much on so it works but looks ugly.

i just made the silicone on my 90.was algae behind silicone and was bubble also.as already said, scrape everything good, wash with some alcool.if you use tape, make sure you remove it as fast as possible forbest result(within 5min) or you will have a lip on the side of your joint.
also buy the best silicone you can get.don't be shy to go see a glassman.i used GE 1200.wich is far better than what you get in renovation store.the silicone is purer.last longer and look better.

I use GE silicone I. Just make sure that the kind you buy doesn't have mildew protection. The GE silicone is exactly the same as the pet store variety, only a lot cheaper.
