well tomorrow I am going to be letting go of a vast majority of my fish due to my upgrade falling through for now, I will be keeping my Midas/devil and my buttikoferi both around 8in, along with a plec and my ornate bichir....its a 5ft 450 litre tank, and realize its likely I will need to let the butti go if I don`t get my upgrade in time...but want to hang on to him as long as possible! would anyone have any suggestions on what else I could keep in there with them long term? the Midas/devil and butti completely ignore smaller fish, so wondered what suggestions people may have for smaller hardy fish that could live in there with them? I do have a male convict and two little red jewels and they all do well so far....maybe add another jewel or convict or two and keep them? or is there any other suggestions as I wouldn`t mind something different if its possible.

I think most small cichlids will work. I have seen it myself with Midas, they destroy anything bigger then 8 inch but don't mind smaller ones, like you said.

This advice is based on experience with Midas cichlids, I have no idea how a Butti would react so..
Maybe some more male convicts. Jack Dempseys and Green Terrors worked with my Midas as well, as long as you don't have a huge 10 inch GT.
Pleco's might work, some Midas ignore them, some chase them around all day.

Oh and I have one more fish to mention, it might not be the best of advice, but my knifefish was ignored by every big cichlid that I owned including Midas and Trimacs.

thank for the suggestions! I do love GT`s....so may try adding one along with another convict or two....I do have a female JD so may just leave her in there, as to be fair she gets left completely alone....I would love a male JD but wonder if that would be asking for trouble to have something breeding in there lol.

No prob..
I have no idea whether a breeding pair of Dempseys would cause trouble, but it's a little risky I think.
There are also a lot of other fish that look like convicts (the Archocentrus genus or has the name been changed again?) that might be interesting. Archocentrus Cutteri for example. Might look a little nicer then a convict, although I love convicts myself.

Thanks, I will look into those....and will probably bypass the idea of another dempsey to play it safe! I do love my male convict....he reminds me almost of a mini barred midas lol....the place I am taking all my fish to tomorrow have a great variety of cichlids, so will have a good look! I do like salvini`s too....but know very little about them, although I am upset about not getting my larger tank I am looking forward to having my single specemin midas/devil and butti as the two main guys in the tank, and will be nice to have a little community of smaller guys going on also!

the salvinis that i have had were tough, you might be able to add one to your mix.another convict-type is sajicas(or T-bars)

thanks all, well I have been and done the deal....the shop were very good and actually gave me £60 credit! I got a lovely salvini! a little green terror and my other half couldn`t resist a little synspillum (I will be keeping a close eye as realise this one may cause problems) so far they have all been in a few hours and everyone seems happy! the salvini has taken a little cave as his own, the little green terror is swimming about bold as brass, and the syn is stuffing its face lol....none of the other residents seem bothered, and have to say the tank looks SO much better now it has a lot less stock and isn`t so busy!....I`m hoping the mix will work out ok, especially as all the newcomers are small so will grow with the original ones.

hmmmm.....things are going wrong with the synspillum (as I predicted to my other half!!) the buttikoferi has taken a major dislike to him!! the midas/devil is not bothered....the syn is now cowering behind the internal filter, but the butti is relentless! I think I may have to take him out....the decision is which do I keep! do I let the butti go or let the syn go (and suffer the wrath of my other half lol)....what would you guys do? who should stay and who should go?
