Reactivating my 55 Gallon drum filter - media?

hi,

I'm planning to reactivate my 55 gallon drum filter.
currently it has about 500 pcs scrubbies inside.

would it be better to add some pvc pipes? or will just scrubbies be better?
because i have lots of pvc pipes lying around, was thinking of cutting into smaller pieces and also dumping into the 55 gallon drum?
which would be better scrubbies only, or scrubbies and pvc pipes?

Compared to the scrubbies the pvc surface area is nearly nil,not worth the extra effort.Now if you were going to use the pvc pipe to create spraybars to increase circulation......

thanks the drum used to have spray bars, but i had to cut them off the drum overflow, so i will seal it up with sealant.
