I have had my florida gar for like a year now and have tried everything in the book to get him off live food but i have had no luck. I cant keep a constant supply of feeder in the apt. because someone (wife) wont let me. Plus i dont like my other fish eating feeders which they do when i put them in there. Anymore suggestions, I feel bad for him.

mine was the same way. he ate nothing but live feeders for over a year. he wouldnt even look at anything else. i tried the substitution method on mine, but it didnt work. i finally decided to try the starvation method. quit siupplying him w/ feeders. every day continue to offer him alternate forms of food (market shrimp for example). he wont let himself starve...he will eat.

If you other fish are big enough not to be eaten than do the starvation method.. only method that's ever worked for me.

I will say mine seem to be more ready to accept shrimp than pellets.

If he is at least a year old already I would try the starvation method using various foods like shrimp, frozen silver sides, etc.

Ive heard of people who have straved fish for 3 months to get them off live food!!! Dont give in....

they can go a long time without eating. but no fish will starve to death if there is an alternitive source of food. even if its not live.

my 3 gars went 2 months without anything since all they ate was live feeders. now they eat pellets, shrimp, smelt. all from the starvation method. try it and dont give in.

Dangle it so it looks like something living. My gar likes to eat crickets, they're cheaper and healthier then goldfish. Just a thought.

I always just throw mine in, although I don't feed gars every day but rather every other day.

Garlic extract will also help induce feeding onto non-live foods....
