Alright. so i feel weird even asking this .. like i should know it from common sence or something. Anyways, I've used fake plants in my tank for a long while now but have decided i might add some real plants in for scenery once i move my oscar out for my snakeheads .. Anyways, never even read a word about plants in tanks .. etc only ever payed attention to people mentioning how nice it is etc. I know a lot of plants are pretty cheap to buy online and get shipped to me. but also wondering .. is it only these plants that survive in water? or could you use plants from a garden say and have them live .. or is this not possible and a stupid question?

terrestrial plants and aquatic plants are 2 different things all together. if you try to plant plants from a garden, they will decline and eventually rot. the other way around, and the plants would dry out. i think the reason you are asking this is cuz there are so many garden plants readily available. there are, however many many choices when keeping plants.

you need to decide what you are looking for from the plants, what setup you are willing to make (or have if you just wanna plop em in), and essentially after those first two, what plants to get. Do some research on what you like and what fits within the parameters you have (lighting, substrate, fish). Some plants require a lot more work than others to flourish. other plants are very hardy and don't require a lot of care. A word of caution is just b/c a plant is sold at a lfs and is in the aquarium section, does not mean it is an aquatic plant. i have learned this the hard way. buying online is definitely the way to go. I have no loyalties yet to any one site. Ebay.com, as well as the forums here are excellent places to start trolling for stuff you like. I hope this helps..... its just scratching the surface of having a nice planted tank

Creeping jenny are sometimes garden plants, though I might be mistaken...

It is Lysimachia nummularia.

thanks :). Yeah, was just a general question cause would have been really cheap and convenient. I assumed they were completely different but had to ask. Can you give me names of some generally low care easy plants for beginners. i don't want many .. not a fan of tanks over stocked with plants. just want a few scattered around for green color etc. Low care plants that would work with snakeheads?

your best bet would probably be Java Moss (Vesicularia dubyana), Java Ferns (Microsorum pteropus), Anubias (Anubias spp.), Crypts (Cryptocoryne spp.). You can buy packages of bulbs from Petco, or Petsmart for a few bucks. The plants in those packages are low care and low light plants. for what you're looking for, thats the most bang for your buck

i would be wary of buying plants from petco unless there fresh in or in a fish tank, the kind they sell sealed in a container that just on a water logged pot, pretty much every single one i bought has had a rotted core.

also check the plants your buying online first alot of petstores sell semi-aquactic plants that will only live submerged for a couple months. like mondo grass

There is so much info involed in planted tanks there is no "answer". Start with simple mosses, hornwort..low light stuff. After you do learn some it will be as addictive as keeping fish.

You can take cuttings from a philodendrum(spelling?) and have them root in your substrate while the plant continues to grow outside of the tank. This also works with bamboo so long as you make sure that at least 2/3 of the stalk is above water. Cuttings from viney plants look great when they grow long and "frame" the tank. They also serve a purpose by improving the your water quality.

Some plants will grow emersed (partially underwater) if the conditions are kept very humid. Most terrestrial plants will die and rot submerged though
