Real Tigrinus

So the real tigrinus is within a black background aquarium while the fake one is always out of water? Seems legit.
Kidding.

Real tigrinus is bluish while the fake one is grayish to black. Hope it helps.
I really love the goofy look of tigrinus. Definitely one on my bucket list.

"Fake" may be correct too but usually IME it is called "false" tigrinus catfish aka Brachyplatystoma juruense http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=566

Merodontotus tigrinus is an old name too but everyone calls these cats "tigrinus catfish". The current name is Brachyplatystoma tigrinum - http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=354
