Here in Suriname the piraiba we have doesn't have the bleack spots.

But that maybe can differ if yours came from somewhere else in SA.

Im no expert just my opinion from experience

The spots are bigger than its eyes , also piraiba don't have any spots below the lateral line. Whiskers are shorter also.

On false piraiba the whiskers are shorter.

Piraiba spots are smaller than the eyes generally.

It is a Brachyplatystoma capapretum aka false piraiba catfish.

@KingofAliens: the spots will start to fade away and disappear completely by ~2' from what we observe around here.
