How often should I change out the carbon, rocks, and pads in filters? I heard it was every three months but sometimes I wonder. And I know not to change them all at once because of the beneficial bacteria.

When they're worn down, personally I wouldn't bother with Carbon either, read the packet though to find out how long it takes to expire.
nice to have two filters and clean them at different times.
you need to clean the pads at least when the flow slows down.
if you rinse them in tank water during a water change it will not hurt the BB.
if you change them leave the bio media and charcoal alone at that time and change them / rinse them a week later

ok because I do have two filters and i changed the pad in 1 of them but everything seems to be doing great...thank u
