This is in regards to past threads so it's an ongoing issue.

3-16-2011 Labored Breathing after a large WC?
6-6-2011 Heavy/Labored Breathing

I installed a window AC unit in this room (den) and I now have the tank sitting at 78F. Last night after my WC I pulled out the airstone and within an hour had a few fish at the surface gasping. So I put the airstone back and even put in an extra airstone that I have as a back up and turned the light off.

With a tank temp of 78F, 2 power heads causing surface agitation and 3 canister filter outlets also causing surface agitation lack of oxygen in the water doesn't sound right - does it? I mean I should be able to get away with no airstones...shouldn't I?

As far as readings go, my tank generates less then 5ppm of nitrates in-between water changes and my ammonia and nitrite are at 0. My tap water has an ammonia reading of 1.0 ppm but have heard that this could be a false reading for Chloramine.

All fish are showing the same signs, but other then that they are acting normal, eating normal, poop is normal and they are growing.

So, my next thought is gill flukes - however the gills on every fish are normal - there is no reddening and they are not flashing which is a symptom for gill flukes. Last night I ordered a bottle of Prazi Pro to treat my tank. I don't like using medications in general but I want to get this figured out. On this tank there is also an 18w UV sterilizer (new addition as of last week), so if there are flukes then at least they aren't surviving in the water column. However gill flukes lay eggs on the fish so that's why I bought the Prazi Pro.

If after treating with Prazi Pro doesn't work/help then I will start aging my tap water for water changes. I have been putting tap water directly into the tank (first dosing the tank with Prime for total water volume - and lately double dosing) for years with no ill effects.

If that doesn't work I am out of ideas. Has anyone else experienced anything like this before or battling it now? How does my plan of attack look? Am I missing something, or should I try something else?

What are you useing to treat your tap water? and imo the next step would be to get some more info from your water treatment plant. I use to have similar issues with my water changes, and switched to a different dechlorinator. Turns out my area uses less chloromines and more copper to treat the water. So I'm assumeing I wasn't getting all the copper out since I switched to a more heavy metal dechlorinator I haven't had any issues with my water since. The ammonia reading you're getting may be right... so I would also try useing soemthing like amequel on a WC and seing if it makes a difference. It may be that simple.

I also don't think prazi-proing the tank would do any damage what so ever and would do it as well just to be safe, and to rule out parasites.

I'm using Prime, been double (and when this issue first started triple) dosing for the total water volume of the tank.

Far as I know prime does not detoxify heavy metals like copper... I switched to Aquasafe because of this. I was useing prime as well. I would honestly pick up a bottle and try this. Its more expensive per gallon or however it's figured out ( it's about 9.99$ around here at petsmart for the big bottle on sale and it goes on sale pretty regulalry). But it does neutralize heavy metals. Or you can get your water tested for copper/heavy metals first. But I'm willing to hazard it's got a very good shot at being your problem.

I'll pick up a bottle of Aquasafe then - thank you for the responses. I would imagine Wisconsin water has to be very similar to Minnesota water so I hope this is it.

I use to have similar problems. I think this is a thread that if you have 20 responses you could have 20 different answers. If you have chloramine that has ammonia in it. You know what I discovered and it really did work for me. Was when I would do a water change I kept all my filters running. and if possible also the powerheads. Some fish are very sensitive to chlorine and chloramine. With the water movement it would help it vaporize into the atmosphere. I also stop changing water and filter at the same time. I don't want to spend a lot of time typing everything out if you want to know more PM me with a contact and I will call you.
