So a few weeks ago I was telling everyone about the new position at work I was offered. Not only was this position one I wanted, but it also meant that I would have far less interaction with out customers, and it was normal 9 - 5 hours; both of which was a huge benefit.

Well I started last Monday, I was loving it and doing well for my first week. Then on Friday the tell me the guy working my old shift can't seem to make it on time or at all so they need me to work it again until march. So now I am expected to do my old dutys and my new dutys and on top of that go back to working midnight to 9am.

Well at first I was like okay, no big deal I can do it, working nights is not all that hard and I would have time to do both jobs. However now that I am here I am really upset about it; almost to the point of looking for another job. I mean to give someone something, and then take it away from them with out saying they did something wrong, and even worst saying it was because someone else did wrong; is just bad.

I mean how would you feel if someone was like, you know what here is this new job take it and enjoy. And then next week they say hey such and such keeps messing up, we want you to do both jobs now. I am all for team player but hate feeling used.

Venting complete, thank you for listening

I'm a stocker at Petmsart and they wanted me to be a stocker(i'm a lead) and try to also do the manager job(45 hours) in a 36 hour job. It was for a promotion so of course, I did. I kept it together mostly besides struggling not having an extra stocker so certain things just didn't get finished(down 45 hours in stocking). Which noone cared, it was obviously going to happen until they named the manager to be. Then they get the nerve to tell me that I'm too focused on stocking and I need to branch out. WTF really, well maybe if we weren't down 45 hours for 2 months and I wasn't trying to do both jobs I could get finished. I had to use every minute of the 36 hours to keep it all in check, which who cares I'm doing my 36 hour plus the managers 45 hours in a single 36 hour shift sooo shut the heck up.

That was fun wasn't it. I'm glad we vented together, haha. :)

It's a bad time for workers right now. Employers demanding all sorts of extras and employees with not enough options to say no. The best thing you can do now is clock in and only do enough work not to get fired.

It's sad that it has to be like that, I like to try and be a team player and help out when I can; even going above and beyond. I always figure if its good for the company they will do good for me; and I always thought of this job like that. I see people who have worked here a long time move up and people that have worked here a short time move up.

i understand your pain, being in the military we were expected to do more with less resources whilst retaining the highest standards and a high safety record.
makes me glad im retired.

is it definitely until march or is there a chance they will try this again?
i would keep your head down for the moment because jobs are few and far between.
hope it works out for you.

I am upset too..

Even the short version is long..

New standards and ways to do things, current employees have not been taught these. Re-Certification is this month, one shot, you fail = taken out of water and put into guest services= no hours & probably reduced pay with 4-8 hours shifts (some of us drive 1.5 hours so that does not cut it, we work 9-10 hrs)= out of job for some people who cant take that=they already hired more people as replacments because they expect us to fail b/c they have not taught us the new standards=fml=I need a job now b/c I cant fail this re-cert b/c I need it in good standing to help me with other jobs in the future=if i pass then we are being trained for 2 parks and they will use all of us between 2 water parks=hours will be cut or put into hours some of us can't work b/c other park has shorter shifts, but is open later during the summer (10pm I cant work that late)= I cant restrict my availability b/c they will drop me to seasonal= I DONT want to go to the other park b/c its a huge water park, with crap hours/schedules....I am at a resort..... I didnt apply for that park I applied for where I am now.
>_< angry.

I dont even want to stay b/c I live 1.5 hours away and would rather work where I live but this failing re-cert problem if it happens is a problem with me trying to get other positions where they perffer good standing with the certifications... at one point in time (doesnt mean you have to have them atm), this is for future jobs or if I want to stay with the company but apply for a position at a non-water park. I am only at my park now b/c I cant get a job here and they wont transfer me closer -_- I have to "apply" and accepted for the position at the park and they are only hiring seasonal atm so that doesnt work for me, no one else around here is hiring either.

Did you try to talk to your boss? Most will respect you explaining your expectations. You will have a harder time getting where you want if your the only one who knows. Squeaky wheel gets the oil, know what I mean? Worse thing they can do is say no, but at least your all on the same page. It's up to you from there, but if it goes bad I would recommend knocking your boss clean out with a muay thai knee to the dome. It's clean, it's professional, and it says im a go getter.

This is not the way you want to operate if you would like to stay employed.

I agree with a majority as these uncertain times are calling for people to really step up in order to retain their positions. Hopefully, it will only be a temporary thing. I would express your concerns, but be ready to continue as normal. The best advice is to give it all you got and make sure that you can walk away knowing that you gave it your all. If you can do that, then it is up to them what they do. If you are truly unable to perform both duties, then it will become readily apparent and they should address the issue.

Just joking with the slacking off comment so everyone knows. Obviously that wouldn't be a great way to get promoted. Very serious about being forthcoming with your boss though. Just tell them what your concerns and aspirations are so you can come to an understanding. Maybe this is something that can be cleared up easily and isn't worth much worry. Communication goes a long way. So do knees to the face.
