So I'm to the point where my discus pair have free swimming fry. I'm familiar with other Cichlids especially mouthbrooders and extracting the eggs and taking care of the little ones but as I understand it, the discus fry need the parents to feed off their slime coat.

So those of you experienced in raising discus fry, I would love your advice and input.

Thx.

Good luck. They need or should be with parents for another week. Extra clean water is key and feed them well.

The best thing to do is start introducing small amounts of live baby brine shrimp to the fry while they're still attached to the parents. Usually after a week or so free-swimming, once the fry start to round out in shape, they will take brine pretty well. Only try a little at first to get them used to the idea, then you can up the amounts as they recognize it and eat it well.

You have to be really careful with discus fry... after several weeks, maybe 4 - 5, they will begin eating so much slime coat that they actually begin to chew off the parents' scales and fins. Once they're eating the brine well, go ahead and remove the parents. You can usually do this around 2 - 3 weeks old.
