Rearranged the display, few full tank shots

Still struggling with getting the right exposure when shooting full manual full tank photographs. My tank appears very lightly lit and dark but it's actually quite bright, I'm taking my light readings off the substrate and then shooting straight a the background. Any tips? It's either correctly exposed with blinding white substrate or underexposed with large dark areas.
