Hi, I moved a few days ago and for some unknown reason my filter quit working. It's just a commercial "Aqueon" filter, but I only bought it maybe four or five months ago, and I turned it off before I emptied it out, and filled it back up before I tried to plug it in. As far as I know the cord didn't get wet at all, does anyone know what happened? Thanks!

Don't feel bad. I just had a 2 yearold Fluval FX5 quit on me. I had to buy another from ebay. I plan on calling the company's customer service dept. and examining my repair options. You may have to do the same.

Do you hear any noise coming from it when you plug it in? If you can hear a hum, the motor is working. Try banging the impeller and/or filter housing. Sometimes impellers need a little help to get going.

Nope, it's totally silent. This makes me think it's an electrical problem, because it hasn't made ANY movement or noise since I took it down.

With only one moving part, checking the impeller is the most logical place to start.
Remove it.
Check it for binding on the shaft.
Check the motor "well" the impeller is driven in for rock, sand, or any other stoppage causing material.
HOB or canister, the impeller is the cause of 99% of flow problems.

I agree with checking the impeller. Take the filter apart and clean it really well, clean the impeller really well, put it back together. If the impeller is completely impeded from moving, or not seated, it won't make any noise.

Yeah, I've already taken the thing apart and it was still clean inside, but still won't start. The impeller could still turn if I spun it around manually, but nothing happens if it's plugged in.

Sounds like you're just not getting power then. Either filter went out or you have a short somewhere.

I have an old whisper 3 where sometimes when i plug it back in i have to take off the intake tube and go in there with a pencil or something and tap the impeller to "jump start" it lol. After that it works fine and dandy till next time its unplugged. If that dont work it sounds like the windings in the motor are broke/bad.
