ok i have one of the 50 gallon column tanks roughly 30''L x 18''w X 24" tall. i want to upgrade my lighting in order to keep some corals mainly soft, like leathers, xenii, zoanthids. can anyone recomend a worthwhile lighting fixture for this, im looking for t5's. the one 30" light i've found at a lfs is the nova extreme and not sure if it's going to be enough. http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/prod/236410/product.web

thanks for some advice

while octocorals, Zoanthids, and such don't have a high lighting need I would go for a fixture with at least 4 24 watt bulbs.

Check out this link. You will notice they do have a 24 and a 36 inch one that has 4 bulbs at 96 and 156 watts. I have heard good things about these nova fixtures.

I don't suggest it but I am currently keeping several types of mushrooms, zoanthids, ricordias and some starburst polyps under 4 48 in t12's in my hundred gallon that was originally going to be a FOWLR (Fish only with live rock). Though they are all thriving quite well actually, I am sure they will do even better when my T5 set up gets here. Based on that and what you are planning on keeping I think you would be "OK" with that one but would go 4 bulb like Mr Reef suggested. I got an ice cap retro fit that will go under a canopy, not sure if that would work with your application though based on what you were thinking on getting.

Hope

Plus. You say soft corals are what you are wanting. That is what I said and I am already getting into the LPS stuff. With the 4 T5's you shouldn't run into lighting issues later on if you choose to add something else.

thanks for the help actually lucked into one of the 36" nova fixtures with 4 bulbs. only $50. good timing i guess

I highly recommend Current Satellites or Dual Satellites - most economically advanced technology one can buy.

I bought refurbished off EBAY direct from Current paid 60%-75% off retail/online sellers. Has 10K 6.7K white lites & actinics 460 & 420 & a lunar led lamp. This system is great for S/W & corals. the Dual Satellites have separate controls for each lighting - so either combo on, or white day only & evenings actinic blue only. I love the actinics - the blue glow so soothing so relaxing! & I don't have any plants to benefit from this lighting system - just discus! & their colors burst out!

if not too late, if too late then maybe next time...

are they t5's or compacts?

they are compacts. I haven't compared to T5's but cuz these particular satellite compacts have actinics as a combo lamp or separate fixture/ballast & a cool lunar led lamp for the night was what sold me. 36" dual unit cost me $79 + $25 shipping so vs. $225 on sale from another onliner.
