dont floridas get a little big for beginners?

Floridas are the most readily available, and from my understanding, top out at around two feet. So, that's not bad, really, if someone wants a gar. I'd hope the OP is ready for a larger fish, anyway, if he or she has been thinking about gars.

needle nose gar look really similar to other gar i have seen, must be a common misconception. are their behaviors similar enough where as i could get a needle nose and learn from him before get a florida gar or another species?

i have no idea, try the general forum regarding needle nose. a 75 can only hold the florida gar for a year tops thou. i suggest you work on getting at least a 120 first, then at least you have some legroom to work with if you cant get a bigger tank after that

I'd say a 180 will hold a Florida Gar for pretty much his entire life, and you might have to upgrade once he gets to 20 inches or so, but that's if he was a specimen who was going to grow to the full two feet in the first place. So, since a 180 is pretty standard, I think it's a good first gar. Also, many people (myself included, except for my Florida with one eye) have no problem getting these guys onto non-live. This also seems to make them a good candidate for a first gar. And, as I said before, they're easy to find.

^ couldn't agree more

Since you're looking to get a Needle Nose Gar, I will move this to Other Characin where you're likely to get more info about them.
