My wife would like to get me a few books for Xmas. What are some good books by title/author that you would recomend for SA cichlids? I would like to make it as easy on her as possible. I am most interested in the geophagine (identification, habitat, behavior etc...) Yes I have Googled and found many results but would like to know what you have actually read/would recomend. ;)

Obviously the top of my list is "South American Eartheaters" by Thomas Weidner but I know she won't be able to find a copy... :(

Posted in the wrong section, sorry guys. I PM'ed a mod to move for me. Feedback is still apreciated though.

I like my good old Baensch aquarium atlas. It has an extensive list of cichlids, including pictures and information on care.

Tankbusters is good. I could be wrong but I think "most" fish books are old and out dated. Some are even filled with a lot of opinion instead of fact. I wouldnt mind owning a good solid current Cichild book myself.

that is what i thought too. they seem out of date. someone needs to come up with a new amazing book of both south and central american.

I have one but don't remembe the name of it, it seemed good but has really no description of the fish, like some have 10 words or less.

I ordered it through Barnes n Noble.

Yeah that is the #1 book on my list. Hopefully she cab get it for me. Any others you guys are aware of that are not out of date?

There is also a book by Wolfgang Staeck and Horst Linke called American Cichlids II Large Cichlids. It covers both Central and South Americans, it is on Tetra Press, has nice habitat and cichlid photos, and some good info.

And the American Cichlids I is an amazing, though outdated, reference on dwarf cichlids, from apistos through to dwarf pikes.

The geo book was the newest SA book I've seen, and it's out of print now. Everything else is going to have some age on it.

I'll look into this one. Thank you very much for the detailed response!
