Havne't seen many discussions about air pumps. I will be running 2 or 3 hydro 5's off one or two air pumps in my dual 50g setup, and I'm wondering how I even size an air pump. I know the depth of the tank is a concern, but outside that what numbers should I look for?

Anyone recommend a brand that embodies all the obvious qualities (queit, reliable, inexpensive, etc.)?

I use the whisper filters...the blue dome shaped ones. They're silent and I've had one running continously for almost 2 years with no problems at all. I'm not sure how to size them up other than the gallon recommendations on the boxes.

aight, so I've been reading a bit.... the short list so far is RENA 400, and Tetra Whisper AP300. Any thoughts or suggestions? both choices are a bit of overkill for the application, but for a few extra bucks I might as well get soemthing I can use in whatever tank I want.

I run Hydro5 filters in all of our tanks so I know what you need. The best air pumps you can get for the money are...IMO the MA600 dual outlet pumps. Don't let the price scare you offf either...they are VERY reliable....very efficiant (low power draw)...high output and VERY quiet. About the only complaint I have them is that the adjustable output features almost worthless...just put it on high and drive two Hydro5's in 30" deep tanks with air stones. You can find them for sale on Ebay for $12.00 to $15.00. I remember exactly...we buy them in bulk.

I like that luft pump, I'd never seen on ebefore though, so I wasn't sure if it'd be worth it.

Wolf - that's a damn cheap pump! this will be for a dual tank setup in my bedroom, so it's gotta be quiet(ish - a bit of a hum might be nice actually, but nothing obnoxious). How loud are those MA pumps? I've got a bid on a whisper deep water pump right now, but if that doesn't pan out I'll defo spring on that MA.

Duh, nevermind, just re-read your post.

hah, feckit I just bought two of those MA pumps. still got a bid on the AP300, but at $30, for that pump, whatever :p

You wont be disapointed. I have a box of air pumps laying around with everything in them from wispers to Optima's and the only ones in use are the 8 MA 600's. Definatly the best bang for the buck and like I said one of them runs two hydro5's in 30" deep tanks with no trouble at all.
