I am having a hard time with algae in my 500 gallon tank. I would like to get a pleco but I've read that they scratch acrylic. I would like to know from experiences which pleco you guys recommend. I was thinking about a dwarf pleco the one that grow 5".

Legalize Arowanas!

Adding a pleco probably isn't going to do what you want it to. Instead, try adjusting lighting levels/photoperiods

I would worry bristlenose would scratch.
What about ottos?

(and legalize which arowanas? just asian gold?)

I did get a Siamese algae eater and he's doing great job on my plants.
I wish they would legalize Asian Arowanas in the US... They are legalizing marijuana why not Aros too

Legalize Arowanas!

U could add a uv sterilizer will help a lot

Very true. I have had great success using one to control algae. Works better than any fish I ever tried and it will not poop in the tank.

Algae can be easily gotten rid of. And there are many ways. I don't think a pleco will take care of all of your algae, plus plecos eat lots of things besides algae.

Turn your lighting schedule back, use a timer, have the lights on just when you're at home and awake.

Identify the source of excess nutrients causing algae growth - High bioload? Overfeeding causing excess ammonia and nitrates?

Try easy, fast growing plants like hornwort, duckweed, or pothos, to out compete the algae for nutrients.

Buy a UV sterilizer.

If you're using fluorescent bulbs, make sure the bulbs aren't old. Old bulbs lose part of their UV spectrum and actually help algae grow.
