Greetings fellow MFKers! So I recently acquired a 40 gallon long and will be setting it up soon. However I was wondering if anyone has any suggestIons for setups or interesting fish which would be appropriate? I am currently keeping Thorichthys helleri, Freshwater Angels, standard convicts and nanoluteus spread out in 6 other tanks but am looking to try something a little different. In the past when I could fit larger tanks I have kept Jack Dempsey, True Parrot Cichlids, Green terrors and uaru, and loved them all. Looking for suggests for interesting, mid size cichlids. I would rather have a single wet pet than a community. My water typically hovers at 6.9pH and I am planning on running three sponge filters for filtration. Any suggestions?

My personal preference is different than most but I will suggest it anyways. A bonsai flowerhorn even a pair of them if you'd like. They do not get that big it'll take a long time for you to get them to 6" which most max out from. Many might not like what I suggest since they're hybrids but I like them.

You can also get a short body red texas.

The short body red texas will fetch big money maybe a few hundred..

This are nice looking fish but not really looking for a hybrid.

Dimensions will be;

L 48 3/4 x W 12 3/4 x H 16 7/8

Basically a standard 55 gallon, with less height.

that's quite an alright sized tank, tbf though; I try to give my fish the maximum space possible, so the most fish id stick in there would be 5-6" size, and you said you'd explored these types earlier...perhaps you could try an oddball that isn't a cichlid, perhaps a type of catfish or so

Salvini might work in that sized tank also check out jewel cichlids a pair would work in there. Maybe a single or pair of acaras.

im unfamiliar with the 40 long, what are the dimensions? :)

it's actually a 45g, I have one downstairs, but they call and sell tanks under whatever labels.....I have a 40 breeder that holds 48 gallon, a 30 breeder that holds 35 gallons, etc etc....
