Hi Guys,

Im looking for some recommendations. I currently have a few live plants in my tank, some are doing Ok and others are doing kinda bad. I ordered some flourish excel to help out. I know my lighting is horrible because they are standard fluorescent bulbs that are like 15 watt. I want to replace them with something that works a little better for plants. I dont want a complicated system. I plan to keep some common/easy plants that require low-medium light. Whats a good wattage for this? Is 160 good? Also are fluorescent bulbs alright?

Right now I have some light algae issues, some of the algae is on 2 plants. I been getting mixed answers and dont have a plan in course for this. I was told that algae will always be in a planted aquarium. I was also told that you can get rid of it as long as your plants take the nutrients from the algae so its dies.Someone also told me you must use fertilizer all the time as long as you own plants or algae will come.

All this info is confusing me. I dont have money to afford a system for the plants. But I want to get a better light but I dont want anything fancy, just something to do the trick. I want to only keep common/easy plants. I also dont want the algae there and dont want it coming back. The only reason I bought the flourish excel to to jumpstart the plants in my tank, but dont want to have to buy this continuously. I dont know, I am just really confused.

What would be something simple for me that isnt complicated and dont cost alot of money. Also, can someone give me a heads up on the whole algae issue? Thanks, I appreciate it.

what size is your tank that will be a big factor in the light you need.

yes some algae is almost always present in planted tanks, green algae on the glass is always in planted tanks but it is easily removed with a wipe of the glass. to stop other algae you need a balance of LIGHT, CO2 (excel), and NUTRIENTS if you have low light then co2 and nutrients do not have to be added as light increases so does the demand for the other things. if they get out of balance is when big algae problems happen.

normal florecent bulbs will work for planted tanks you just want a Kelvin rating of between 6500 to 10000 with these type of bulbs the wattage per gallon (WPG) rule does apply or is atleast a good guess at the amount of light needed i think 1 wpg is good for no co2 and low light plants.

hope that answers a question or two. read the stickies they will help alot.
