so i decided to get rid of those all in one cartridges that come with small HOB filters. i redid my EX20 on my 10g with 3 layers of Deep Blue ployfiber, 1 layer of amonia remover, and filled the rest of the space with as many fluval C-nodes as possible and my water has never been clearer. i will definetly be customizing any small filters i get from here on out... i also added a DIY sponge filter to the tank as weel

now that i think about it, should the amonia remover be after or before the c-nodes?

i would remove the ammonia remover altogether. If the tank is cycled there should be no need for ammonia remover, and if the tank is cycled, the ammonia remover is taking away ammonia from the beneficial bacteria.

thanks, thats what i thought...

i just took it out and put in another layer of Ployfiber

i thout of customizing my HOB filters. they work better id imagine

my water has never been clearer on my overstocked 10g you can pack a lot more mechanical and way more bio media in the same filter space... 10g tank contains common pleco *growout*, 3 pictus cats *growout*, 2 skunk corys, soon to have some celestial peral danios once the pictus's go into the 75g. then might use it as a birchir growout.

Plus its way cheaper... the polyfiber measures 30"x18" and cost about $5 the 4 layers are about 4"x5" and there is enough to make plenty more. the old cartridges were about $4 and were replaced about once a month

only problem i c in this is that putting poly filber in a hob filter you will get strands of it in your tank for sure. And then they will get sucked back up in the filter and clog and ruin the motor. Just pay close attention to that

will do... thanks

any recomendations on a cheap media that wont end up getting into the motor?

I don't think it would really clog the motor. I use polyfil in my canister, and that's even closer to getting in the impellor than in your hob filter
