my buddy wants to know the best way to get rid of him...... no snails will eat it huh?

What sort of red algae is it? You don't mean its the coralline algae do you?

if it's red slime algae then your cause is a lack in flow. Buy some decent powerheads and that should help take care of it. Another thing that can be done is to turn out the lights for 3 days solid. Then on the 4th just run actinics on the 5th you are safe to run all the lights. That also works well. It is a very natural way to help with it. There are cloudy days on the reef so it won't hurt anything. I have an all SPS tank and I do it from time to time just to give the tank a rest.

I agree it wont hurt anything but just so ya know alot of useable light still gets through on cloudy days even if we cant see it. Turning ya lights off is different.

step 1) Increase flow around area where cyano bacteria is building up.
step 2) You can reduce lighting to 8 or less hours a day for a while.
step 3) Large water changes to reduce waste and control algae by starving it.

step4) if all esle fails you can use erythromyicin to kill it at about a quarter dose or a red slime remover product but I feel erythro works better.
