i have three common silver dollars two of them the largest ones have some red at the edge of there tail fins and have bright red anal fins they are not redhooks is this gender related??

I have several species of Silver Dollars, and I notice that within species, this red coloration, as well as darker coloration, exists in some, but not others. I have always assumed this was related to gender, as these fish with the darker colors tend to "chase" members of the same species which lack those colors.

I witnessed the exact same thing yesterday with my Metynnis maculatus. The smaller one with more red and black was chasing the slightly bigger ones (supposed females). Looked a lot like the typical characin mating.
