I have 2 55 gallon tanks. Recently both tanks broke out into substantial amounts of red algae. I was under the impresion that red algae was most common in marine tanks. One tank was previously set up as marine. I was curious if this could play a part in the outbreak. I did some water changes and treated for algae blooms. It now seems to be undercontrol, until this morning I noticed that I am now having a bloom of green algea in one tank. I was curious if anyone may have some incite into this algae bloom, or suggestions to get ride of the algae.

How long ago did you set them up? You may have too much leftover food or too much lighting.. I would suggest getting some plants to out compete the algae or get a pleco, although mystery snails work too. I personally use both. Also although its kinda rare, whatever water you are putting in may be inherently full of nutrients so promoting plant and algal growth... I guess you'd have to test for that to find out.

Both were set up within the last 6 months. I have plants in one tank that one has finaly stopped with the excesive bloom. The other tank is continuing to grow both types of algae red/green.

hmm well I would just add some algae eaters or plants to the other tank thhat is having problems then.
