My friend and I got into an argument about the bare min. number of piranha you can have togather safely, I said 6 and he said 3. Now I know that having 3 COULD work but I think that they success rate would be MUCH higher having 6 than 3.

So if you would please give your opinion, personal experinces, ect...

(The tank size was never mentioned in our arguement)

Both are you are right...reds bellies can be kept in 3 or 6 depending on the size of the tank. Every piranha owner have their own way to put.

But I Would put 75-90gallon 3 red bellies. min tank size.

125gallon and bigger would go for 6 red bellies, However It would be perfect if you put in 180gallon including decoration. But that just me.

5-6 would make for a better shoal, but would require a 100 plus gallon tank. Most people are limilted to keeping 3(whichs works weel) because of their tank size. So 3 or more is fine, although there is those who beleive they shouldn't be kept in even numbers.

Even number are fine as long is not 2...you can keep 4, 6, or 8 in large tank. Not a problem for sure.

I have found that as long as you have at least 3 there is not really much difference, you still risk losing the occasional fish. As they get larger the risk goes down but if you start with small (1-1 1/2") rbps I have found that if you start with 12 you will have 8-9 by the time they reach 8-9".

Losing one along the why is a -chance- , You can lesson that -chance-
If you keep well fed and stock per portion to your tank . More of a chance to loose one while small when they mature(8 inch plus) its less likely to loose one
