To people that have had red bellies and live plants what are your experiences with the 2. Did they destroy them or leave them alone. If so at what size were they? I've looked this up and have seen people say they didn't bother them and others say the piranhas destroyed them

Ive had red bellies in a planted tank and they never destroyed them. Only when they breed they will start to dig etc. and might destroy plants in the process. If you do decide to go planted, make sure that the plants are well rooted and placed sturdy in the substrate, because when reds get scared they dart through the tank and might uproot the plants.

Here is a video of my old planted rbp tank 😉

I agree, piranhas and live plants would work. Although I would be careful on what plants you put in there. Also my Piranha like to tear apart my fake plants so I'm slightly skeptical but unlike fake plants, real plants can grow back what they lose.

I've tried numerous plants, my adult shoal usually manages to knock into them or chomp a little! Good rooting plants like swords and water sprite seem to do better IME. Just make sure not to get higher lighting plants because P's are more comfortable in lower light conditions + if you go med/high light you will need co2 to avoid algae and balance out the co2/n-p-k/trace scale.

I haven't tried live plants with red bellies, but I have anubias in with my sanchezi.

He'll take bites out of them; but for the most part leaves them alone.
