I have a red belly pacu that I purchased about 6 years ago as a silver dollar sized fish - I was told he would get 4 inches max by the fishstore and that he would be fine in my 20 gal tank. I am not a monster fish keeper, I joined this site looking for people who can appreciate this lovely creature and would like to take him in at approximately 13 inches now. I am in Muskegon, Mi 49441. If you or someone you know may be interested please contact me, this guy needs a new home - I can't upgrade my tanks anymore beyond the 75 gal he's currently in...needs much much more space. I've contacted the zoo's in the area and no responses. Any other ideas are welcomed as well, I'd hate to have to put this huge guy down, he's been a cool fish to have around and i'd love for someone to enjoy him!

The same thing happened to me a couple years ago, mine reached around 20" in a 150 gallon tank. Thankfully i found someone on this site to take him in. Good luck finding a home for him.

After searching around the net, it seems like this happens alot. I'm mad that fish stores sell these and pretend they'll only get a few inches - it's insane. I tried talking to the store about taking him back or helping me find a home, all they said was try the zoo. Nice. You sell fish in your store that get so big I need to contact the zoo! :/ I really want him to find a great home and live a long and happy life - not a cramped one in my tank. They are very cool fish and I learned alot about them watching River Monsters episode on Pacu the other day... I have a river monster in my tank, holy cow! I also found an article in the newspaper about someone releasing one into Lake Michigan after it outgrew their tank (presumed) and it was caught by a fisherman and was quite large... it wouldn't have made it through our winter from what I understand.

I had a big one before and gave him away eventually when he outgrew the 60 I had at the time. GLWS

On an episode of River Monsters they found that pacus were released in some other areas outside their natural habitat but still warm enough for them to survive but there was not as much falling fruit and nuts for them to eat so they've adapted by becoming more canivourous with an occasional attack on humans. Those molar like teeth look pretty painful.

too bad your not in socal i woulda took him with the quickness lol haha :D
