is a red belly on a saxatilis sveni a sign of female? i know the dark splotch but it doesnt have that (yet) is starting to have a black line through dorsal where my larger one im assuming is a male only has a small thin red stripe.

The girls have pink bellies . . .

(an old pic of one of my girls a few years ago, the pinks is mostly washed out by the flash)

awsome that row of black looks like mine, i was looking for one distinct spot but now i am completely psyched that i have a male and a female. nice fish and great pic.

Thanks :)

Just give them a couple chunks(about 12" long) of 1.5" PVC tube - that's what all of my pikes have seemed to prefer at spawning time.

Good luck,

Black spot/blotch...;). Depends on the species what is going to be in the dorsal. But yesh, if it has a plump, red belly, chances are that its female. :)

Hope yours DO pair up and breed for you! Sveni are some HOTT pikes! :)

the male is 5-6" and the female is only 3- 3 1/2" but he tolerates her pretty well got some clay pots a cinder block for hiding and a planter thats a couple inches tall and like 12x6 footprint that the male likes to lay down in. the convicts and little rd/midas seem to keep the male busy enough he hardly has time to notice her. hope they breed for me though once there big enough. how old/long do they usually need to be before they breed?

thanks peanut, you think a 90 will be big enough for the pair? throw 8-10 pieces of pvc and half a dozen convicts? or would they be alright with oscars and barred midas in a 10x5?
