Living in the Northeast, we lost power for the greater part of last week (Saturday around dinner until Wednesday 3pm). 24 hours in, my tank was down from the usual 78-80* to 66* and falling rapidly. It is a 29g planted with a few rummy nose, cardinal tetras, and a bunch of RCS.
I decided to relocate all of the livestock to a relatives house a few minutes away that had power, and moved them into a bucket with the filter and heater. I was pretty sure I caught all of the shrimp...
Fast forward to Monday night, I spotted a single RCS in the tank, but it hid when I tried to catch it (water was freezing cold to the touch at this point, and my house was about 40*F.
I figured he was doomed, and went back to the other house.
On Thursday, I drained the tank and moved it to a different part of the house, because it was a convenient time to do it. I added 10g of water back to it, and set it up again.
Later that day, I saw 4 RCS all alive! I can't believe that they lived through the freezing cold water, no filtration, having the tank be drained to <1" of water, then having warm water dumped in to try to save the plants. It's amazing what some of these little guys are capable of.
/feel good story
