I started a 10 gallon red cherry shrimp tank roughly a month ago. I am using a sponge filter and do weekly 50% water changes with prime. I started with 20 juvenile red cherry shrimp and they have slowly died down to around 10. Any idea on why they are dieing? Water temp is 76 I feed a quarter of an algae wafer roughly 2-3 times weekly. I have no live plants and no other occupants. The Shrimp have roughly doubled in size and I have had them have babies already. All water Tess come out good. All help appreciated.

What decor do you have in the tank? And what substrate you using?

^ I was thinking maybe it could have been something to do with inadequate decor, but if there is decor and substrate etc, i would guess that it likely has something to do with water hardness / general hardness / PH as Joe said...

It could be that your water doesn't have enough calcium in it to help your shrimps shed properly... what sort of a diet are they getting? are you feeding them any foods that are rich in calcium by any chance?

You can look into some of the specialized shrimp foods which often has what shrimp need...

Otherwise, im sure there are certain veggies such as spinach cleaned and blanched lightly that could also work?

spinach has oxalic acid, which blocks calcium adsorption (at least in humans). I'd think kale would be better.
