i bought a pair of breeding red ciebal about five days ago. My question is that, would the tank be ready for them? he the thing i did a full water change today cause the wood had a white flim on it. are these fish hard enough to put them in today? or should i wait a couple of days. how long does a 30 gallon take to cycle?

ok thanks. NO the tanks was running for about five days before i did a full water change. I have a pleco in there and he looks great hes eating whatever it is but he swiming around and doing his thing. Would they still be ready?

No fish should really be added to an uncycled tank. But it can be done.

Hey, this is the way we cycled tanks in the "olden days". Although usually feeder fish were used.

Make sure you do a partial water change EVERY DAY to keep the amonia down to a very low level. You do need a little amonia to feed the newly growing bacteria.

Soon you will see nitrIRES rising.

Eventually after 2-3 weeks, the amonia and nitrites will be 0 and some nitrATES will show. Then the tank is cycled.

If You have a filter on a established tank You can switch it to the new tank and it will help greatly.

i did 50% of the water out of my tank that has been running for 6months to the new tank and the other half freshwater out of the sink. I put some decor from my 100 gallon tank in there as well. so hopefully this will help with the cycle. I have to rush it cause my butercoughfri is attcking my red ciebal. im watching the chemical levels very closly and the behavior of the fish also. thank you all for the info is there something else i should be doing?

Like mentioned above anything you can move over from the old tank helps. Pretty much just bringing over bacteria.

Keep up the water changes and you should be fine. After all, red ceibals are not Oscars :)

thank you peathenster! are these types of fish uncommon? i dont hear alot about them and i cant find alot of info on them as well?

Not your typical lfs fish but not too rare either. They can be aggressive for their size - I felt that mine looked/behaved somewhat like mini-festae :D Well not that aggressive really but you've got the idea. They might also benefit from a cool period in the winter. Here are some discussions from knowledgable people http://www.cichlidae.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4826

thank you once again! very intresting.. i didnt know theyre subtropical? if im reading this right they should be keep at a temp of 50-60*F? hmm
