Just wondering who has and any tips about them. Just bought one at an auction for $9, adult sized.

They kind of seem like they would be similar to rainbow cichlids in temper men and behavior. I just hope she will get a nice color for me.

They are an interesting Uruguayan cichlid that does not need a heater.
I keep mine in ponds in Milwaukee spring thru fall where temps drop into the high 40sF without a problem. They usually spawn throughout the summer, and I pull the fry out in Oct.
They will spawn as small as 2" for females.

male

Mine have also spawned in algae choked tanks outdoors, and the fry grew out eating only the algae and whatever fell into the tank, no other feeding.

Sweet. I won't be breeding though due to lack of space and lack of male.

What do females look like when not in dress?

here is an adult female, "not" in spawning dress, it's about 4" ( I believe)
they need a bit of cool down for a couple months per year, the same as Gymnogeophagus, not drastic (60s will do).

When I tried keeping them at constant tropical temps, they did not fair well.
Although in summer in shallow areas of the pond (where mine like to spawn) water temps can rise into the high 80s, when the sun beats down.

They will sometimes hang out in water only a few inches deep.

In the pic below, you can see a group of fry grazing on detritus, to the right in 2" deep water
