Red Claw Crabs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They are best kept in brackish water.

Can they be housed in fresh? Yes.
Will they live as long? Probably not.

It really is best to put even just a little salt.

Becareful of them escaping. They're very good at it surprisingly.

I bought a red claw crab, being told by the pet shop owner that he'd be fine in freshwater, and that they like to get out of the water sometimes, but its not necessary. Can anyone tell me if this is true? Is surfacing vital to the survival of this crab??? And it's ok with the water, I already have a bw tank.

I know with most BW fish, that in time their immune systems will be compromised if not kept in bw water. However, I do not know if the same will happen with the crabs.

I can only assume so.

depends on your definition of being "fine in freshwater" will they live past the warranty given by the store? yes. will they live longer than a few weeks? yes, perhaps even months if they have hard water with a high ph(like BW only w/out the salt and minerals) will they live their full life span? no, not even close. surfacing is vital to the crabs. they are best kept in a paludarium.
