Hi Folks,

It was suggested to me on AC that I ask for guidance from a specialist cichlid site - would be greatful if you would have a look at this acei and any help/advise most welcome.

tank params ; 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 or less nitrate (API master test kit), Ph stable 7.8.

added 2 fish last week, juvenile labidochromis caereulus and 3 inche Pseudotropeheus Elongatus. The Acei ignores the former, does not like the latter but is hyper dominant over him.

you will note redness as described in the title; its symmetrical, i.e. identical at base of both ventral fins. he is breathing a little heavy.

no other signs of ill health whatsoever; he did have a small tag above/on one eye but this was soft-tissue, probably sustained by collision with decor while chasing and has pretty much resolved.

other things about this fish; he almost permanently has a string of poop hanging out of him, however not white; very healthy if profuse brown fish poop. the pics makle this look a bit radioactive; its not an issue just a trick of the light, as is any redness showing on white fin areas.

eating fine and the ventral fins themselves are extremely healthy.

The redness looks raw and painful, his ventral fins are in constant motion. I looked at pics I posted of this fish last week and can't see any signs of this - although I do recall making a mental note a couple of days ago that some inflammation appeared in this area; nothing like as vibrant as is now.

no other fish show symptoms.

thoughts and advice welcome.

I should say that I can't see any signs of external parasites.

well...no improvement...bearing in mind that's a week of Nitrates 10 or less, water change every second day and melafix I am inclined to think it is not soft tissue injury, or water quality related.

There's not a mark on him, except on these two areas, feeding is excellent, he is still the dominant fish in the tank.

however he's breathing quite heavily and so are a couple of others...I've discussed with some people who I trust (who also can't say what this is) and I'm going to medicate tonight with what is available; Interpet No. 9 Anti-Bacterial is the start point.

yeah it looks like it would hurt. i would also try some antibacterial meds (i would quarantine him in a small tank though) and see how he does. do any of his tankmates have the redness? your parameters are great so it has to be bacterial, fungal (which it doesnt look to be) or parasitic (which i doubt also).

let us know how the little guy does--he is a beauty!
