I have just put a Red Devil in a tank with several other fish. It is about 4.5 inches long or so and seems to be shy and non-aggressive. Is this an individual trait or does he just need time to acclimate? He is the largest fish in the tank.

Personalities vary in fish just like they do in virtually every other critter. BUT! If I had to make a prediction....I would say that he is just not "settled" yet. As soon as he is comfortable in the tank he will take over. Keep an eye on things!

not only is it not settled in yet, it also probably hasn't reached maturity which will happen around 6" or so. at that point it's true personality will come out and it most likely will take over the tank. the real question will be wether it allows tankmates or just starts killing them off. I'd keep a very close eye and have a tank divider or a second tank on hand just in case. :)

Out of curiosity.... Is your purpose of putting this red devil in your tank with several other fishes to keep as a community tank? Or did you just want to see your red devil in action?

Thanks for the advice. Everything seems ok right now. He is not very aggressive towards most fish and for some reason will not even react to the birchir rubbing against him.

my RD was mean from the very beggining...15 minutes after he hit the water he started attacking most fish and a day later he was the most dominant.my RD and my JD killed off most of my fish but the cons were spared in the end my RD dominated

my red devil was docile at first and then onc esttled began beating on her tank mates. for me it was a sign that she'd be better off with the larger cichlids until she started picking fights with them. Being that my 13" male O wasn't about to back down from a 6" RD I removed her into her own tank. I finally ahd to get rid of her to soemone who had a 240 with several other RD's.

give it time, soone enough the dominance will start.
