Hi All,

I have a juvenile Red Devil. I’ve had it for about 8 days in a 75g tank. The fish will live there alone for a long time, possibly for life. I was cycling the tank for a while with some zebra daino. After the cycle, I kept them in there since I heard it was possible they could help bring the fish out of its shell. I should have known that wasn’t going to be an issue as the fish destroyed a series of bags with its teeth while trying to get it home from my LFS. We eventually had to layer a cooler with the bags just to keep it from leaking too much on my way home. It had every fish gone by Saturday, just 6 small zebras.

After those little guys were gone, it really came out of its shell. It started chasing me from outside of the tank and flaring up (loving the personality). I decided to do a vacuum tonight during a water charge and this thing got me a few times. It didn’t hurt at all, but I can feel the teeth. I’m curious as to how that’s going to change with size. Currently he/she is only about 3-4” and I read they get more aggressive with age.

1.) Should I invest in gloves or a divider or just accept getting bit is part of keeping these monsters? I don’t know how I feel about him biting me, more because I don’t want him to get sick lol..

Not complaining at all. This is the reason I got this fish!! I just want to keep it healthy and not contaminate it with the acids on my skin (that may sound dumb).

2.) Currently, I’m feeding it Hikari gold floating pellets, NLS sinking pellets, Raw Shrimp once a week, Cucumber once a week. Thoughts here, anything I should add or remove? Frequency of this diet okay? The pellets I’m using as its primary diet, rotating them daily. This guy has not rejected anything I put in the tank for food.

Any advice from you guys would be appreciated in keeping this fish healthy.

Thanks!

Tbh it won't stop just by extended cleaning equipment so you don't get nipped. It's a territorial thing with the RD it doesn't want you in its space.

Thanks as always. You’ve been a big help answering this newbs questions over the last couple weeks. Checking in to that extended cleaning equipment. Any advice on brands that work well for picking up excess on top of sand?

I personally don't like the Aqeon Gravel Vac the tubing crimps to easily but a thicker hose can replace it.
