I have a 9in Male Red Devil and a 4.5in Festae that I believe to be a female. I can notice that she has the black markings starting to develop on her dorsal and pelvic fins and from my understanding that usually indicates female (though that's not always the case).

Anyways, Im wondering if my RD and Festae might be trying to pair up and possibly breed. They are in separate tanks but right next to each other and spend a fair amount of time following each other's movements and flaring at one another on occasion. Lately my RD has been rubbing his stomach on the flat rock that makes up a part of his cave and biting at at (as if he's cleaning it). Any ideas?

Yes, they would seem to be pairing up through the glass (or trying to size each other up if they're two males, though I believe they're pairing).

If you want, you can try adding them to the same tank and see what happens. Will produce interesting fry if they pair up. :) Also you can always vent your fish to see what sex they are for certain. :)

That's what I was thinking. My RD has been digging like crazy for the past week. A lot more than usual. They will be going into a 100 gallon (along with a couple others) next week so I'll see what happen. It would be nice if they did pair up breed. I'd love to see how the fry turn out.

Frankenstein Fishkeeping at work again... If you can avoid it avoid it. Otherwise keep them in your on laboratories and never let them out

Doesn't listed Pete the Purist here. If you feel you want to breed them by all means go for it, just don't turn around and take them a local store. I have had fish try and pair up between the glass before so that might be happening here. You might some interesting fry from the mix, but most might turn out a rather bland mix of the two.

Yea I hope they do pair up. I would never take them to any pet store to sell them off. I'd most likely use most as feeders for the rest of my cichlids and keep the best looking ones to see how they turn out.

nothing wrong with them going to a lfs aslong as they are sold as Festae x Midas.

I think you're putting a bit to much trust in dealers here... If I knew someone was selling hybrids I'd never go there again... But in all honesty I think most dealers wouldn't even entertain selling them so it would be a waste of time growing on hybrids. Just keep one or two for yourself and never let them pollute the gene pool.
