Red Devil and sand...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
a new plastic dust pan makes a good scooper for removing gravel. The RD will love the sand, since it's even easier to move around.

Just make sure you don't replace anything else you don't absolutely have to for a short while. Try to keep the decorations in a bucket with tank water while you're doing the switch. It's not at all likely that you would crash your bio system, but it's the only concern besides the sand being contaminated (which is also extremely unlikely). Don't forget to rinse the sand before putting it in there.

If you have a hang on the back filter watch out for him spitting sand in the inlet. Mine did it all the time. The propeller takes a beating from the sand being in the filter.

1) Syphon a decent amount of water into a bucket
2) Put fish in bucket
3) Scoop out gravel with clean tuperware, dust pan, etc...
4) Put in WELL rinsed sand. If you think you rinsed it enough, rinse it a few more times. Since you are putting your fish right back in the tank, you REALLY need it to be dust free before you put the sand in the tank so it doesn't cloud the tank.
5) Fill tank back up with new water like you would if you were doing a water change
6) Put fish back in tank
7) Monitor the water conditions daily for a week or so and do water changes as necessary

Has worked well for me on the 3 tanks I did. My big Hait went from a gravel tank to a sand tank, and he seems to like the sand just as well as the gravel. He takes big mouthfulls and spits them out after he moves to where he wants his sand. My old Dovii liked it too. He'd fan his tail to move the sand around.

It's sand only for me from now on. You're going to love it.

Sand is a way better substrate than gravel IMO. As mentioned, make sure you really rinse the sand well or else it will cloud your tank and take days to clear.

i have had a Red Devil with sand. at first i thought he wouldn't like it as much , since they like to move rocks around. ... but the sand didn't slow him down a bit. he still made his wavy archatexture in the sand. lol.

i think fish like sand better overall.
