Red Devil Hump

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nuchal hump size is determined by genetics more than just reaching a certain size. Some males (and females) develop large nuchal humps, while others might hit 12" with a very small hump.

If your fish is an Amphilophus labiatus they usually don't get the large nauchal humps associated with Midas (Amphilophus citrinellus) as an example. However if your fish is a mix of Amphilophus sp. it may or may not develope a large nauchal hump depending on the species that were mixed to create your fish. Most generic "Red Devils" are this type of mix and the name Midevil a has be cioned to refer to these interspecific hybrids. Depending on where you bought your fish and what it was purchased as It's hard to determine exactly what you have.

Agreed.

If we are are talking about a midas or a cross. It depends.. could be 6 inch, could be 10.
Even in the same fish it depends. If you have a male that is constantly harassed by another one he would not develop a hump so quickly.
Then when he becomes dominant he will start to grow one.
But generally speaking somewhere between 6 and 10 inch mines always started to develop a hump.

Here is one of my 4 devils this one is the largest bout 7in long and the only one with the lump
