ok so recently and by recent i mean the past day and today , my red devil has been chewing up his poop then spitting it out and is just going all over the tank like a cloud of crap. Making the tank look horrible at least until my filtration can get it clear again . My question is why in the heck is he all of a sudden doing this and any ideas why ?? tank is 55 gallons ,filters 2 aquaclear 110's I feed twice a day i don't think alot but its probably a good 20-25 pellets of nls 3mm thera +a he is a 8 inch fish and there all gone within a minute

He likes the taste???

No but seriously... you are probably feeding him too much. Adults don't need to be fed everyday much less twice a day. He is likely excreting nutrients and food since he is fed all the time and when he gets bored or hungry he is getting what he can out of his feces. Stop feeding him so much and it may stop.

Pretty much all of my cichlids will chew on other fishes feces and then spit it out though.

ok so pretty much he is bored ? I could try too feed just once a day and see how that goes . feel bad cuz he will attack his food like he hasn't eaten in a week or its a live meal . so i can't imagine he is full of what i do give him ? ps how long will it take him to get 12+ inches? He will be going to a bigger tank within a month .

Your fish will eat all day like that if you keep throwing in food. I honestly think that you feed him to much in each feeding. I feed my 12" male RD once/day and he gets like 5 pellets of NLS 3-5mm. Thats it......

Yep. The above is right. cut heavily on feeding

Feeding fish is part art, part science. How much to feed depends on the energy being supplied via the food, and the energy being expended by the fish. Not all fish of the same species, and/or even the same size and growth stage, will necessarily require the same nutrient levels. The activity level of each fish has to be factored in.

Having said that, even a rather active 8" red devil is going to require half the amount that you have been feeding. Cut the volume back to half, and feed once a day and you'll have better results. You can't rush the growth in a fish by feeding a large volume of food, they simply crap out the excess nutrients.

Thank you all for the ideas and thoughts . Starting today i will start feeding once a day i usually have been feeding right at 12 when the lights go on and again at 7 lights out at 8. So I will feed half of what i do now and see if that makes a difference and ill feed about 4pm so its in the middle of the day .

So glad you did not mean me..lol...
