Hey everyone, I know that wild red devils develop their lips from going after inverts in rock. If I was to use lava rock in my aquarium will it make their lips develop? I know it may sound like a silly question but I just gotta know.:nilly:

I've heard this can work but I've never seen any actual proof

I wouldn't do lava rock, but I'm not sure if it would help. The ones I had developed the lips naturally, but they were true rd's. Not saying yours aren't just speaking from my experience with them.

Thanks guys, I am going to make sure that they are true rds. @Reaper13- I heard that captive bred rds don't develop the lips, that's why I was asking. I've had what I thought were red devils before but never got the lips, so I always wondered.

Where did you get them? They're likely midevils which wouldn't get the lips

My previous ones were 2nd gen Rapps that I got from my lfs in Long Beach CA, you can read a little about them in my post concerning a buttikoferi that I had. Everything about them seemed more like red devils than midas, I've owned both over the years (plus a few midevils from large chain stores). This time I plan to order them from the wet spot, hopefully they are the real deal.

I don't really think the lips can be replicated in the aquarium but I'm giving it ago It doesn't seem to be working but probably has to do with genetic the lips are formed from rocks and the lips provide a suction to retrieve the prey out of the rock like a vacume
