I originally bought this guy because I felt so sorry for it. It was in a tank with a huge 14in male trimac cichlid (not flowerhorn) who was putting a beating on him. This fish was about 10 inches at the time and in a 60 gallon with the Trimac. His eyes were cloudy and his fins were ripped up. Like a stray dog in the street I took him home. Now I'm curious to know if he's a True Red Devil or a Midas cichlid. I say Red Devil. What do you guys think? By the way he is 12 inches now and a true beast. He loves to take food from my hand and play with his octopus toy in the picture. Best mercy purchase I ever made.

yup looks like a cross to me. It is really stocky like a midas and it lacks a long pointer snout like a rd would have. But the lips look big. Crossed fish, like 90% of all the other midas/rds in the hobby these days.

gorgeous thats for sure..

I think it looks more midas to me, I saw true red devils in person yesterday for the first time. Their lips are HUGE and pretty pointy.

It looked like a bunch of angelina jolie fishes swimmin around the tank.

gorgeous though, really make me want another tank to get a beast like this.

Well this cichlid is absolutely aggressive. I keep him by himself. He will attack anything placed with him. My wife found out the hard way. I left the lid open for a few minutes while I prepared his food. She decided to dust the top of the aquarium. So of course he jumped up and bit her arm. Her face was priceless as she retold the story, still in shock that a fish would jump out of the water to bit her. Here's another pic that shows his face better. I agree that he is probably a mix of the two but I see more Devil than Midas. His mouth seems pretty pointed and thick lipped to me. Not Jeff Rapps wild caught pointed or thick but good for a captive Devil.
