Are they the same thing or just very closely related. i have heard them called both. either im an idiot or they are really hard to tell apart? :screwy:

they are different but very similar species that have traits that overlap a lot so it is hard to tell what a particular specimen is, popular belief is that most specimens available in the trade are hybrids of the two unless you get it from a reputable dealer

that's why we just call them RD/Midas

they are different species but they closely related from each other. the midas is "amphilophus citrinellus" and the red devil is "amphilophus labiatus". its really difficult to determine which is which. iam also confused before with those two species because i have both of them and they are almost the same. after reading an article, i learned that if u will look from the top of their head, the red devil's upper lip is a bit pointed and for the midas' upper lip is rounded.

Also can tell them apart by the length of their "snout" I think midas have stubbier faces but do not quote me on that ;)

LOL! oops to late :P but yea i think your right. i went to the barcelona aquarium and they had a breeding pair of midas, and they kept chasing this huge pangasius catfish away lol

A pure Lab (Red Devil) is more elongated looking, with a pointier snout and big lips. A pure Cit (Midas) is very stocky and muscly-looking, with a shorter snout and normal sized lips. As already stated, its pretty much impossible now to get a pure fish of either species without ordering one from a very reputable breeder...99% if not all LFS specimens are a mix of the two. They'll usually grow up to show more traits of one than the other, but never really look distinctly like either.
