Red devil or oscar?

My first post - hope it's in the right section!

I took a few years off fish keeping when the oscar I had passed away after being a long-time member of my family.

Now I have the opportunity to purchase my dream tank & I'm again drawn to having a single or pair. I thought it would be an easy choice: two baby oscars in a 6ft - done.

But when I took a look around my lfs I felt a real connection with a red devil who had been 'sin binned' for bad behaviour. There was just something about he looked at me - I'm smitten!

I went home & read up on them, so I didn't get my hopes up over nothing (I knew nothing about these guys & whether I even had the skills to keep it). Seems like it would be ok.

But when I went back & talked to the lfs guy, he seemed to think I'd find Oscars more satisfying.

Do my question is, do you ever change breed because of a particular fish that you just feel like you were meant to own? Or do you choose on breed only? And would you choose Oscar or Red Devil on the specs alone?

Seems to me you have already answeres you own question if you felt the draw toward the red devil then that is the one for you. That is what i would personally pick between them also.

usually wen i go in to a lfs and see a fish i like my 1st thought is i want it then go back home see what i can make happen or which tank it can go in comfortably... but im not a single fish kinda of person as u are but ive mainly only had cichlids soo theres no real type of fish that would make me feel to change unless snakeheads became legal out here>> but if your thinking of just 1 fish a red devil or pair would b a great make up for your oscar loss i had 1 that was my fav in its tank when they gett bigger i learned they dnt care for tankmates to much and start trying to run things... but really the choice would b on u and what you u feel is right and what u want to raise cause both fish have a lot of character and i think you'll b happy with either you choose... i personally would do the devil tho
 
IMO if you liked oscars you will love red devils they are so much more active and more aggressive. Oscars are nice but I find when they get big most of them are all dark looking and lay there like sloths. A red devil/midas mix will always keep you on your toes!

I'd go with the Red Devil....I have had Oscars and they are great pets. But I think the Red Devil will be something new for you and they will definately have a personality.
 
Thanks heaps for your responses guys! Seems the Red Devil could be a good choice.

I'm excited now! Can't wait to give him great a new stimulating home, rather than the tiny little solitary tank he's in at the moment.
