Hey ppl.. just a small query.. i've got these couple of red devil, green terror and firemouth in a 30gallon grow out.. they are all around 2" to 2.5".. the largest i think is one of the red devil.. a true devil.. seems to bully the rest of the stock but hardly ever comes out of his/her cave.. is this ok? there are quiet a few broken pots in the tank and he/she seems to hide in any one of these almost all the time except when i'm feeding blood worms? any ideas? let me know.. cheers..

I am not sure what it is you are trying to accomplish. If you are trying to have it stay outside the cage more than that would require removing things it can hide in. But I say appreciate what the fish does.

as long as you've got plenty of hiding places for all the fish then there is no problem,in the wild young midas/devils are preyed on by bigger midas/devils amongst other things so it's natural to be a bit cautious, once it gets a bit bigger it will be more outgoing but by then it will need a larger tank anyhow

It will be fine for just abit longer, but as soon as that fish hits around 4" in a 30g you will really start seeing it's true attitude show. Most likely it's pursuits of the others will become more and more relentless and there will be no where to hide. Even in a 125g that group might now work due to the agression of the RD. Depends on the individual fish though. Good Luck, but my suggestion is get a larger tank in the next month or so. 30g is to small for any of those fish to live in long term except the FM. However the FM will be slightly cramped.

Some do this when young as fish grows his territory will grow often extending beyond the tank let him do his thing for now things will be getting much more interesting soon enough

yeah I'm not sure what it is you're trying to do but so long as the devil isn't killing the other fish I'd be happy. Not sure how much longer that'll last though, as Anubisscott alluded to. I'd get a bigger tank asap. :)

Hey ppl thanks for the reply.. my question was if this was normal behaviour.. thats it.. i def dont want to change its ways and make it come out more often.. i was a lil confused cos he/she seemed to be the largest, chased, bullied but still staked the cave and never comes out.. sorry about the delay in the reply i totally forgot cos i didnt get any replies quick.. thanks a ton..

i do agree the 30G is def small... max in a week or two i will have a couple more 120G after my aros and rtc are released into my 2400G pond that is almost near completion..

Eventually the idea is to move them to this tank / pond once they are a considerable size.. the FM will remain in the 120G..

folks.. i've attached a couple of pics.. what amphilophus are these?

no way to tell exactly what species of Amphilophus it is just by looking at it. I'd just generically call it a Red Devil.
