My red devil has scales of black, what is that from, i dont wnat that i want my devil to be just that bright red, feeding him krill and spectrum. Water changes twice a month of 20% and vac.

That is perfectly normal no telling what he'll change into, color wise

yes it's true that it's possible for them to change color patterns, and such growing up.

i have kept several of these species before, and most if not all these usually start out brown with spots/vert stripes, and what not. then over time as they grow, they eventually "peel", meaning turn red/orange/white and what not. once this "peel" has occurred, it's very unlikely it will turn back to brown.

how big is said fish?
and has it already been all orange or red?
any pics?
also what size tank is this fish in, and what other occupants?
why only do 20% WC every other week?

WOOT post 317 :) Sorry

...did the same thing except his fins started turning black, he's about 6inches solid red/orange, he's the top dog of the tank but i was wondering if this could be a health problem

not a health problem.. growth changes as everyone has said.

Tank is a 40 breeder he is about 6 inches now, and water changes thats a lot of water thats roughtly 10-15 gallons of water each time man. I'll get pics posted of him soon

If you want good color, you need to be doing larger, more frequent water changes. When mine was 6" and in a 55, he was getting 50% once a week.

10-15 gallons changed out of a 40g twice a month is not that much... It may be sufficient to keep nitrates at an ok level, but once a week certainly wouldn't hurt either.

i agree, you need to do more water changes.if you slack on the water changes, you could end up stunting your fish.just think, every time you do a water change, you flush their toilet.how would you like it if someone else was in charge of flushing your toilet and only did it every 2 weeks, its discusting if you think about it.
