I was doing a bit of a ring around yesterday, in search of a female and was informed that an employee of one of the lfs in my area had a 6"er he would bring in today, for me to veiw. So i go and enquire as to the age of the fish and he say's she is two year's of age. I was suprised at this and he replied to my blank look by informing me she had been housed in an 18" cube for the majority of her existance. It was quite obvious to me that she has been stunted by this practice and will not achieve her full potential, but i couldn't resist her, she is such a cutie.

I have never dealt with stunted fish before, so do you think there's any chance of her gaining some more size? As you can see, she's fairly emaciated, but i'm pretty sure i can remedy this. She needs to bulk up before i let her in with the male, who's easily double her size. Although my intension's are primarily to use her for helping his nuchal hump on it's way, i would still like to breed them and use the fry as feeder's for my Carpinte.

Well she definatly looks stunted, I have never seen a red devil with that sort of shape and she definatly looks like she could use some food. I have never kept a stunted fish. It is likely she will not live to her full potensial but given a little TLC she could be around for some time, I don't know how well she will breed though. If she is that size at two years I doubt she will grow at all but it is possable.

yea..def has the look of being stunted, ive seen plenty of fish that have been stunted in pet stores and they all look the same as yours after a year in a 20 gallon with no real growth but humping and arching backs.she can do some recovering in a nice size tank and even live a long life under proper care,I would not use her for breeding though.

stunt sorry...

Why wouldn't you breed her? Her condition is environmental, not genetic. She'll always look a little funny, but with proper care she'll look much better and live a "normal" life.

I wouldnt just because of her condition she is in(stunted)it could be to much for her in my opinion to put through all that physical demand mating ritual laying eggs raising fry male constantly wanting to breed its just something i wouldnt do.

She'll be a fine little breeder. Stress will not become to large of a factor as she'll always have the safety of a divider to retreat behind.

I'm pleased to report that she's doing very well. She's eating everything offered to her with gusto (she's actually a little hog:D), digging very prolificly and flaring gill's at both the male and myself. She's a great little fish and aside from being slightly under developt, she's displaying all the charactoristic's i'd associate with a Red devil.

You know, in the Arowana forum, there was a guy who picked up a 24" Silver Arowana... This guy was living in a 90g aquarium, 48" long only, this guy was about as straight as a question mark, after a few months in a MUCH larger tank, he's gotten a nearly full recovery, straightened out, eating like a pig and still growing.
